Kernel upgrade

Hi. I just installed Slackware 9.1 and as you may know it runs 2.4.22 version of kernel. But I don't know why ( maybe of some of my hardware parts ) I get some annoying messages at boot time. It's something about insmod ( e.g. insomd: /lib/modules/kernel/drivers/char/i810_rng.o.gz failed....etc. - not a quote... just a reproducing of what I remember from the error message ). I tried all ways to get rid of it but couldn't do it. And I am thinking of upgrading to 2.6.2 version of kernel... but as I am a newbie I do not know what this implicates. I mean... does it supports hardware like 2.4.x version of kernel or it has more... or maybe even less support :)
I have a internal PCI modem ( Intel 536EP V.92 ) - and it's my only way to connect to the internet momentanly ( do 2.6.2 have PCI modem support ), etc. If someone would be so kind and make a little list of what are the differences from 2.4.x to 2.6.x kernels I would be vary greatfull... ADVICES ARE WARM WELCOMED :). Thank you very much all you that will going to help me. Cheers.

well the best i can suggest to you, rather than me, or anyone else sitting here trying to give the mile long list of changes, i will just say go to www.kernel.org and look at the changelog for 2.6 ... your going to have to go there anyways to get the kernel sources for recompiling ;-)
and yes it supports PCI modems, but yours specifically i have no idea ....
i would suggest you look into that, and to get better results use www.google.ca/linux ...
just see if the kernel supports it, or do you have do download a patch / driver seperate ..
if it works outta the box and was picked up in your slack9.1 install, then it more so is included with 2.6 .. you'll just have to make sure you select it :p

heres my HOWTO if you want to reference for you recompiling process ;-)
