Question Kernel updates and kernel specific software

Recently, I upgraded my Fedora 9 kernel. Immediately after a restart, the system did not boot into the GNOME desktop. It remained on the command line.

To resolve the problem, I had to start the system using the previous working kernel, download the kernel sources, then go back into the CLI and recompile/reinstall the NVIDIA drivers.

Is it possible for these drivers, or any software that I install that depends on the kernel version, to recompiled when the kernel is upgraded? In the least, the video drivers should work.

Currently, every time I dare to update the kernel, I run the risk of having an unusable system.

Thanks,
MS

That's the price of using downloaded nvidia drivers. When you update the kernel, you need to get a copy of the matching kernel headers at the same time. Then, when you next boot your system, you compile the driver. The same is true of madwifi if you use that.
