Kernel recompile

Hi Guys

How are you all? I am new to this linux platform. Just started doing things out. Today i tried to recompile my kernel linux-2.6.11.10 in FC4. But in the a make modules section i got and error.

Now i have kernel 2.6.11.1
The steps which i followed,

1. download linux-2.6.11.10
2. copied the old configuration file .
3. make menuconfig, selected .config as alternate cconfiguration file and saved.
4. Make modules,in the drivers section it got stopped

include/linux/i2c.h:58: error: array type has incomplete element type
include/linux/i2c.h:197: error: array type has incomplete element type

I didnt use any patches since there are no patches for this version. Is this a bug or something in Linux? How can i fix this ?

Hi, and welcome to linuxquestions

The 'correct' way to do kernel compile-new
1. copy old config as new "cp <foo>/config /usr/src/linux/.config"
2. upgrade the config file to newer kernel "make oldconfig"
3. check the options wanted "make menuconfig"
4. compile the kernel and the modules "make && make modules_install"
5. copy the new kernel to boot "cp /usr/src/linux/arch/<arch>/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-new

So probably you just missed the "make" in the compile process.

are you using gcc-4.0.0? gcc-4.0.0 and higher versions doesn't allow incomplete element types anymore so to be able to compile a kernel, it's either you choose a higher kernel version or install gcc-3.4.x. i also don't know if the higher kernel versions are already working stable with 4.x's. perhaps.

Thanx konsolebox and Zmyrgel for fast replies

Zmyrgel,i have one doubt . Since i am a Newbie i know only 3 steps for any installation, config, make ,make install. In this case i have a doubt. Is make oldconfig is really needed if i want to use the old configuration? Is it sufficient, chosing the old configuraton file in the make menuconfig section, i mean omitting the make oldconfig section. It will be very useful for me if you can please explain the difference bw them.
Then konsolebox, iam using gcc version 4.0.0. After the two successive failures i downloaded the version 2.6.12 and i got the installation done without any error.

Once again thank you all for your help.Have a nice day

Okay, I think that the make oldconfig and loading a old configuration file are pretty much the same operation. Also note that they are optional phases, usually done when upgrading to new kernel. If you just recompile your kernel to add or delete some entry, you can forget the make oldconfig phase.
