Kernel Question

I had a few questions about the kernel. I have had 2 bad expirences with the kernel and don't like messing around with options. I was thinking of making a few changes to the kernel. ACPI=off, NTFS support, etc. Should this cause any problems? Or is there a way to make a backup just incase something goes wrong?

All you need to do/should do is to change the
EXTRAVERSION=
in your /usr/src/linux/Makefile to something
personalised, and call the resulting kernel something
other than vmlinuz, and you'll be all sweet, able to
switch back and forth between old and new kernel
from your boot-loader (if you configure it that way,
that is ;}) ...

I do currently have 4 different kernels to chose
from in my lilo-menu (not that I use the other 3,
they are mainly experimental things).

Cheers,
Tink

If Tink doesn't mind me adding a little bit...

The kernel guide at Digital Hermit's site has been very easy
for me to use, and he also explains the extraversion stuff.
