kernel panic when i try to boot mandriva

Installed Mandriva once and it worked fine booting from external drive. Got another external drive just for mandriva and it will not boot. In the boot sequence about half way down the page it reads;

could not find resume device (UUID=7805...etc.
could not resolve resume device
creating root device
mounting root filesystem
mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
setting up other filesystems,
setuproot: moving /dev failed: no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /proc: no such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: no such file or directory
switching to new root and running init.
switchroot: /dev does not exist in new root
booting has failed
Kernel panic. not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

I run XP as my other OS. I don't know how to correctly remove mandriva or Grub. I erased the partition Mandriva was on but then Grub gives an error 17 and I cannot boot windows unless I reinstall Mandriva. Then Mandriva will not boot. I know it has to be right under my gigantic nose but I just cant see around it.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated, Des

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You could run 'fixboot' or 'fixmbr' from the WinXP to restore your M$ bootloader.

Your removal of the mandriva filesystem pointed to by 'grub' left your system crippled. Whenever you make system changes like adding hardware with a new distribution you will have to update your 'grub' menu. Do a search here on LQ as this very subject has been covered so many times.
