"Kernel Panic" Error while installing RHEL4.0

hi everyone!!!

i m a newbie in linux.

I installd RHEL4.0 on SATA HD (manual partitioning with disk druid)
while manual partitioning i have done the follwng:

/ (system root) 6gb primary partition
/boot 500mb prim partition
/swap 2gb (twice my ram)
/vfat 2gb

but after the final reboot it showed this error-->

mkrootdev: label / not found
Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
Switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

1st i chose / as location of grub boot loader--> same error
next i chose /boot as location grub boot loader--> same error

It apparently loads Linux OS through bootable CDs but fails to load on my SATA HD .
I have 1 GB RAM & 3.2GHz P4 processor.

Pls guide me .
thnks

You may not have checked your disk controller or fs in the process. I've come across this error before, and it's usually because of misconfiguration of some essential hardware that the system needs to load at boot time.

Another thing to consider is building your disk controller into the kernel with * rather than m as in module. Modules need to be loaded in the initramfs for a modular kernel to function.
