Question Kernel Panic during tar operation

We run a dual AMD with ASUS server M/B on RedHat 9 with kernel 2.4.20-18.9smp

Every time we do a .tar backup of selected folders and files the server simply crashes with a Kernel Panic error. In some cases we need to run fsck to fix problems on the hard disk and this has cost us dearly.

Has anyone had similar problems during a .tar backup process and if so could you offer any advice?

Regards,

Ryan

Are there any details on the operation, like max achieved archive size before error, backup user ulimits or a strace of the process?
