kernel panic: attempted to kill init

Hi all,

i have a problem when i try to use redhat 9.0 or redhat 8.0. There is no problem during the installation but when i want to use it, i have an error message: "kernel panic: Attempted to kill init .

have you ever had this message?
What does it mean?

I don't understand why i have got this problem with the redhat 8.0 and 9.0 but not with the 7.3!!!!

Have you got a solution to solve my problem?

Thanks,

Eric

*LOL* that's a good one (no offense). Ok I probably can't tell you what
exactly is going wrong, but init is the first process that's started by the
kernel during bootup; init then starts all the other processes (network,
server daemons, shell, whatever). So it's the parent process of all the
other processes, and under *NIX, if you kill the parent process, all the
children processes are killed too. So: No init, no working Linux. As a
suggestion: You may want to find out which configuration files init reads
and then check these. Ask google; you will find plenty of documentation
about Unix booting.

1. Could you post your hardware configuration?
2. I suppose "...attempted to kill init" is not the first message on screen?
What does it say before?
3. "if i can have a prompt", I suppose you mean "if I can't.."? Do you have
access to another pc? So that putting the hard drive in another machine
is an option? Otherwise, try to get Knoppix (there is a cd with it with the
new issue of german computer magazine c't, if you can have access to this. (Maybe press shop of airport or train station, if you live in Paris) Other-
wise you might take one of those Linux-on-a-disk floppy disk bootable
distributions, ilke http://www.toms.net/rb/.
