kernel panic!
 

I'm tryin 2 instal RH 8. After i chose grafic or text the next screen ( a lot of "0" to cpu and the rest) last line
"<0>kernel panic! Atempted to kill init!"
What's the problem?"

Run the media-check first.

At the boot: prompt, try: noapic nolapic nomce
Try to catch the last few lines before the kernel panic and post them here.

Above all: unless you have an extremely compelling reason for using RH8, do yourself a favour and try something newer... if you like RedHat style, try Fedora Core (version 5 is out, version 4 is available with a book "Fedora Linux 4 for Dummies"). Otherwise I normally suggest Ubuntu or knoppix for newcomers.

... to find a good distro. If you don't have the bandwidth to get the iso (I have used a netcafe for this myself) then someone will post you one (ubuntu for eg.) If you're really stuck, I'm sure someone nearby will send you one.

I'm kinda curious as to why folk end up deciding to install such old distros... maybe I'll start another thread for it.
