Kernel Newb

I have debian running and seem to have fubared the kernel
when trying to move from 2.4.18 to 2.4.22.

Did some online searching to update the kernel, but was wondering if someone could show me in a bit of detail how to update the kernel using make oldconfig.

I'm having a hard time understanding where and how to copy the old config to the new .config etc etc.

I think I missed a number of steps, some detail would be okay

Thank You

The step-by-step guide is here: http://newbiedoc.sourceforge.net/system/kernel-pkg.html

Scroll down to "advanced topics" and it shows you where your current kernel config is and how to copy it to use with the new kernel. I followed that guide recently and was able to patch kernel 2.4.22 to include win4lin support, and compile it. I had never compiled a kernel before, so I think the guide is pretty good.

Your config file is in /boot. I have given a detailed account of how to upgrade from 2.4.18 to 2.4.22 the Debian way in this thread. Have a go and let us know how you get on.
