kernel compiling

I am now running RH8 with KDE 2.4.18. I would like to update/recompile my kernel. It is a minor upgrade. Has anyone used RH's up2date successfully? I am a newbie. I would like to do it myself. Any good links or steps on how to go about it. thanks
