kernel build too automatic

Hi,

I built a new kernel but during the 'make modules' and 'make modules
install' part somewhere the process went automatic. Too automatic: the boot loader got edited and changed, the files (System.map, initrd, etc) got copied and of course the system didn't boot. I'd like to do the steps (editing grub, copying files) all by myself as I did before so I know what I'm doing. I had success that way before so I'm wondering if somewhere in a new kernel makefile or somewhere else these automation functions are built in and if I can turn them off.
Thanks,
Laci

It looks like you ran make modules install instead of make modules_install. Using the install target is probably what modified your boot loader, etc.

Or I could be misreading what you typed?

No, you read it right, I did 'make modules install' and not 'make modules_install!
Very good eyes, thank you very much!

This is one of the reasons why I'm always careful to make a backup copy of ... boot-images and the related maps; and the .config file relating to them.

I learned the hard way.
