Keeps going back to the login screen

Hi All,

I am trying to login to a CentOS 6.3 linux machine but after entering login info, it goes back to login screen again. It works fine at the CLI (run level3) but not at run level 5. I tried checking /var/log/messages and /etc/log/secure but could not find any clue.

Please help me to resolve this issue.

Thanks in advance!

The problem is probably somewhere in the startx command. I suggest that you start at /etc/initab and follow the runlevel 5 logic through to where CentOS issues the startx command. Then check out the logic in the startx command.

I have seen something like this on my Fedora 19. Are you using gdm as the login screen? If so, there is a potential race condition wherein gdm does not unlock the X server before the user session starts. The user session cannot grab the X server and thus quits and puts you back to the gdm login screen.

The error would be found in your $HOME/.xsession-errors as I recall.

I cured it by switching over to light-dm.

As I recall, this is what I did on Fedora 19.

As root:

yum install lightdm
systemctl enable lightdm.service
systemctl disable gdm.service

reboot
