Keeping modem online while changing user
 

I've been using Linux (MDK9.1 in KDE) for about a month. Does anybody know of a way to prevent a dial-up modem from disconnecting when you logout from a given user, then login to another?

The reason I want to do this is so another person in the house can check her email and have the whole thing password protected. Is it possible to do this or am I forced to have to find an e-mail client that will suit this purpose?

I currently have things set up so that she can check her e-mail in KMail, which I copied onto the desktop as an icon and set it up to have her as the user and, therefore, it asks for her password. But this is not entirely foolproof. For example the address book won't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This really has more to do with the way you're dialing in than the mail client you're using. It sounds like your dial-up connection is tied to your user session, so when you log out and terminate that session, the dial-up connection is terminated as well. Are you using a PPP connection? How is it initiated? You may have to reconfigure this to use an inactivity timeout to hang it up instead of how it's set up now.

I'm using KPPP to dial in. Perhaps I need to use another dialing program that could allow the connection to stay active for at least a few minutes after logging out of KDE. Do you know of any that would better suit me?

Sorry, I can't help you there. I haven't used PPP in years. I only knew the command-line tools, on other UN*X flavors actually, so I don't know what all is available these days.
