kdm gui does not load beyond login page

I have installed debian squeeze and everything has been going fine for a couple of weeks. Today, after not booting for a couple of days, on the boot up during the command line the OS forced a check of hla1 and found an inconsistency in several blocks. Then the first discrepancy in KManger where I was not presented with any options on login in the bottom left of the screen, (I have kde and other session desktops). Only a login screen with the default Debian background. After login I was left with just the default Debian background.
Any suggestions?

On a second point, I want to keep my system clean and have been using Xfce, I want to purge Xfce and use icewm. Can someone instruct me how to completely remove Xfce.

Thanks

perhaps its not the best way, but the easiest one:
in synaptic.
if it doesn`t exist install it for that purpose :-); no kidding.
try xfce as a search term and purge all entries, one after another. it shouldn`t be to much, i just did it.
(i think if you remove thunar you`ll get removed lots of other stuff into the bargain.)
BUT:
you have to check the packages if they`re just getting removed. purge them.

bout kde/kdm: dunno, seems to be that buggy way right now (i got different problems, e.g. no menu-bar in iceweasel; system-inconsistencies etc.). remove it and install another login-manager or startx from the cli. i hope those problems will be solved with some upgrades:

all as far i know, just wait if one has got a better proposal.

It appears that xdm is now set as your display manager ... you need to change your configuration to use kdm.

from where?

I do not use Debian ... so I will make a guess:
Code:

dpkg-reconfigure xdm

i mean from where does it appear that xdm is the new default login-manager? as long as he didn`t explicit installed it.

Solved

j1alu and dxqcanada, thanks for your suggestions, I ended up using "apt-get upgrade" and "apt-get update" and everything is working again, John, thanks for the advisory regarding cross posting, blame it on over enthusiasm or over caffination, they are one and the same.
