kde wont boot after install.

I just installed Mandriva LE 2005 and have not been able to boot kde, it displays the splash screen and acts like its going to boot but all it gives me is a grey screen with a black mouse cursor, and stops right there.

I also get an error message during the kde splash screen, I dont know if it is related to this error or not... But it says:

The application soundserver (artsd) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).

Please let me know how I can get kde up and running. I dont know much about linux, I ran Mandrake official 10.0 before on a different box with no problems.

Read http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Try being a bit more specific.

Also, try running Gnome--that way we can find out if there's anything broken in your base X setup.

Which X do you use (free/org)? Which version? Which version of KDE? Which version of artsd? Which sound card are you using? Which video card? Which drivers?

When you log in (in X) you can choose a `session'. If gnome is installed, it should be there.

$ man X
scroll to the bottom.

It's a program that talks to the sound card on behalf of other programs that want to play sounds.
I don't use kde, but I suspect
$ artsd --version

---

Also, try upgrading, downgrading or disabling artsd.
