kde will not load because of moniter settings

hey it Mr X. i just loaded mandrake 10 today, but i set the reso to high for the moiniter (in beos it works at 1124x868!!!)
i am sickened by how long it takes to boot up compared to BeOS. but oh well, i still wanna use it.
so im stuck in the console thing and by doing these commands
root
kde

then it gives me the cannot init $DISPLAY
is there any command i can give that will change it so it will boot up into kde or gnome or anything because i keep getting an error like 'display something' in the error.

reply quickly, because i wanna get it fixed before i get to bed!

i just had this problem as well. you can change the resolution from console by editing this file:
Code:

/etc/X11/XF86Config-4
if you need to you can fix it by reseting the settings by renaming the old config file to the current one like this (in the X11 directory)
Code:

mv XF86Config-4.old XF86Config-4

HOW TO edit using the command. i tried typing edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 but it gave my command not found. just tell me how to do this, because i can only understand commands if the language is in specific keys typed. ;)
yeah i re named it with the second command but now i get another stupid error 'no display found' 'X10 fatal io error 104 this is just a bunch of bunch and this is getting me no were. im just going back to BeOS, if it screws up again after the next try of someone answering this. hope you can help!

ok. do this.

Code:

su
cd /etc/X11
mv XF86Config-4.old XF86Config-4

it should reset to a low resolution that you can go back and change to what you want once you get in to your GUI.
