KDE v Window Maker
 

I'm running debian Woody - 2.2.20 kernel. At one point I was running Window Maker but later installed KDE. Along with x-window-system, I installed all 3 packages with debian's "apt-get install" installation program.

I want to switch back to Window Maker but I can't. I tried

dpkg -P KDE
dpkg -P wmaker
dpkg -P x-window-system

figuring I'll uninstall X and then reinstall x-window-system & wmaker, but after I do that, KDE continues to come up.

Thoughts; help?

The suggestion that comes to mind first is the one you don't want: Don't use Debian Woody.

Have you considered upgrading to a newer kernel and installing a different distro? Mandrake 10.1 is quite nice, a free download, and it comes with tons of window managers and you can install them all and freely switch between them without installing and uninstalling software.

My question to you is why would you inflict windowmaker upon yourself? What a horrible desktop that is.

Sorry - I know this isn't the *real* answer and that someone else will answer you with the actual instructions on how to do what you are looking for after I post this, and that you might sneer, but that's what I suggest.

Mandrake reminds me too much of win-doze. Plus its kernel is bloated with all kinds of stuff I don't need. Debian kernels are nice and compact.

As far as Windowmaker vs KDE - call me insane.
