With the newer X, sometimes the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 is read instead. Do you have that file?

# Configuring X

Common X configuring tools:
Debian - dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
Mandrake - XFdrake
Redhat 7.3 down - the setup utility leads to several config tools
Redhat 7.3 up - redhat-config-xfree86
You may have these tools:
XF86Setup
XFree86 -configure
Xconfigurator
xf86cfg
xf86config
xconf

XFree86 -configure worked for me (as root) But i have Slack so you might want to try redhat-config-xfree86

All I have is "XFree86 -configure", but that's what I ran originally that got me into this mess : )

If your gui is working try hitting Control and plus or minus to adjust screen res. Also what you can do is type in XF86Config and this will guide you through everything in X
