Question KDE Frozen - Crashed - Stalled

Greetings!
I'm using KUBUNTU 6.06 (Dapper Drake), and I've got a couple of Konqueror crashes already.
The latest one, I was downloading a couple of 200MB+ files and then tried to update with the Adept.
Everything crashed, the menu bar froze, and the files showed "Stalled".
I had to turn the PC off manually.

What should I do in such a situation??
How to save what I'm downloading or force it to keep dowloading??

That doesn't sound normal. Have you checked that the hardware in the system is good? I've had lots of crashes explained by a bad component (usually memory). Anyhow, does the machine lock hard or can you switch to a virtual terminal using CTRL+ALT+F1 (indicated that only X windows is frozen)? If you can check the top command to see if the machine is thrashing on anything in particular.

It's not normal that updating using adept should cause KDE to freeze up. I use KDE with Ubuntu as my main desktop, and I never had this.

Can you log in OK after a reboot?

Assuming you can, I hope it's just a freak incident. You might be able to get some useful information from the system log, /var/log/messages.

Just a hint on downloading. Considering use kget. Once installed it'll take over downloads from konqueror, and is quite a nice download manager. I suspect it would be better at continuing interrupted downloads than konqeror's own downloading mechanism. I'm not sure how it would handle a complete lock up though.

Thanks!

Greetings!
Thanks all for the answers!!
btmiller, I run MS XP in the same PC, and runs just dandy.
Thing is, I tried everything BUT CTRL+ALT+F1
Well, if I'm able to, how can I see if anything is wrong?
With ps -al??

matthewg42, I couldn't find anything for the date it crashed. And yep, I can reboot OK after crashes.

Well, thanks, and if you know why my screensaver is SO slow, plz take a look to:

If you can get back to a terminal try looking at the end of /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see if the X server has reported any errors. You can also look at the "top" command (just type top at the command line after you've logged in) and see if the CPU is overloaded and what's hogging it (look at the second line, if the CPU is skewed towards lots of user or system time or memory is low looking at lines 3 and 4 there might be a problem). Type q when you want to quit top. To be honest the display can be a bit tough to interpret for the noninitiated so you can always do "top -n 1" to print out one frame and then you can copy it here (e.g. if you do top -n 1 > ~/mytopout.txt you can just post the contents of the file mytopout.txt in your home directory.

OK, I went through that a bit fast. Please post back if it did not make any sense or any of it doesn't seem to work.

BTW, it might also help if you post your system specs.
