KDE Fails to Awaken After Susie Boots.

I'm new to Linux and installed SUSE 8.2 a month or so ago and use KDE 3.1.1 as my desktop. The machine is a modified HP Pavilion AMD K2 350MHZ with 158MB ram, PCI sound & video, serial modem, USB printer. Dual boot with Win98. I using generic (600 x 800) settings for my Studio Works 520Si which is not supported.

All has been fine until a couple of weeks ago when it happened that after a successful SUSE boot KDE would not start. This means I am stuck and have to pull the plug.

Frequently I have to reboot three times, other times KDE starts up first time.

The irony is that my Win98 is very stable, reliable & nippy. I expect SUSE/KDE to be the same and for political reasons I want to be able to get Windows off my hard drive.

I would appreciate anyone's insight here!

Charlie.

Hard to say without direct access to the box.

The first thing to do is to -after a hang and reset-
boot into single user mode, and analyse the logs
in
/var/logs

You can sort them by date, so you don't waste
time on "real old stuff" :} ...

ls -ltr

The bottom ones will be the most recent.

That said one might add that KDE 3.1.1 wasn't
particularily stable, can you easily update to 3.1.4?

Cheers,
Tink

Is it possible that you have onboard video and it is not disabled in favor of the PCI video card???

Check your BIOS. See if the video is configured correctly. I am guessing that there is a hardware problem here.

Thanks Tinkster, I will inspect the logs!

I will check the BIOS but Windows sees the PCI card and so did YAST when installing. IIRC, I had to reset a jumper to disable onboard video.

Thanks,

Charlie.
