KDE crash with Debian
Hey everybody! I am a bit new to linux. I just downloaded Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 r2, but I've been having a problem. When I try to log in, if I choose KDE or Gnome, it starts to go, then sends me back to the login screen. I don't have any idea how to troubleshoot this type of problem, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

I had a similar problem with Fedora. I got this annoying window that said my session lasted less than 10 seconds.
In my case however, I was able to log in as root , and I found that it worked great for user accounts created after the program was installed. you can give it a shot, but fedora stuff tends to be modified from the original. |
If you can't find a easy fix try apt-get update then apt-get install x-window-system,hope this helps.

are you trying to login the GUI as root?

OK everybody - thx anyway, but I think Debian is a little over my head. In addition, I believe the CD I installed it from was corrupted. I just zapped it, and I will try Redhat next. I posted to the forum first, then realized what happened. I think KDE was not booting because some critical components were missing (I was able to get into Gnome, but it wouldn't run KDE components from it). Again, thanks anyway, but I'm going to try another system. BTW, the support here is great. I'll be back to search or post if I've got other problems
