Kde?

Is there an easy way for me to switch to KDE to try it out?

Right now, I have GNOME running on my Ubuntu distro.

Ubuntu is based on Debian and I have done what you are asking for in Debian. The way that Debian does it is you run the synaptic package manager and install the kdebase package. That gives you a kde desktop in addition to your existing gnome desktop.

You can switch between the two desktops in your login screen. There will be a menu somewhere on your login screen where you choose whether to log into kde or gnome.

Yes, but you might want to install more than just kdebase: various things like applets and full-blown applications are not part of the 'base' package and you will have to decide whether you want those or not. In my view, you won't get the full kde experience without them, but YMMV.

When the login screen comes up, you should have a couple of options like 'session type' (this page is sometimes called a chooser; it allows you to choose what type of session you want); select the approriate GUI and away you go!

There is an option in Synaptic that will install the full KDE desktop and applications, not just the base. Can't remember the exact details.

There is. I'm pretty sure i did that from Ubuntu, though i think i prefer Gnome rather than KDE.

There is Add/Remove from the programs menu of Gnome, and if you search KDE, you'll find it. It installed many KDE apps too, which are also launcahble from Gnome.
