KDE 3.4.3 Dektop Icons Disappeared

Hi Everybody:
This is a problem that I have never experienced with earlier versions of KDE.
My OS is Kubuntu 5.10, on a (formerly) Dell, with a Chaintech CT-7NIF2 Mobo,
run by a AMD XP 3000+ CPU, and with an Nvidia video Card.
The Problem is:
When I first installed Kubuntu and configured "desktop>Behavior" to display icons
of the Linux HDD's, they were displayed as I configured them. But when I booted
into Kubuntu later the icons were missing from the desktop:( If anyone has any thoughts
on this I'd be greatly relieved:)
FYI: I've been a registered member for several years; and thanks to the knowledge and
experience of many of you, I've never had to post because through your posts I've been
able to solve many Linux problems. Also, still concider my self pretty much a newbie,
because I haven't been spending much time on the 'Net.
Thanks for any help:D

Hi,

click on the desktop with right button and choose "Desktop configuration"
When the window appear, choose on the left "Behaviour" and the right "Device Icons" tab.

You need to set "show devices icons" and of course be a member of all necessary groups :)

I hope this is what you are looking for :)

All the best;

KDE 3.4.3 Disappearing HDD Desktop Icons

Hello
When I got home, tried your "right click on desktop" suggestion.
However, that only got me back to System Settings. My original
settings were unchanged; but still don't have ANY icons. If you have any other ideas, i'm open to trying them:)

What is in your /etc/fstab file?

And what is the output of command:
Code:

id -a
All the best

Hi pinknick
I'm at work now. But when I get home at 0600 local; I'll checkout
/etc/fstab and the results of id -a.
Since the last time I spoke to you; did some research and found out
that KDE.org released KDE3.5. A comment in a post at KDE Forums; a member
said that KDE.org had addressed the icon bug in the new release. However, before
I install KDE 3.5; will try your suggestion.
Thanks:)

Hi pinknick
This is the output of id -a:
uid=1000(wayne) gid=1000(wayne) groups=4(adm) ,20(dialout) ,24(cdrom)
,25(floppy) ,29(audio) ,30(dip) ,41(video) ,46(plugdev),104(lpadmin)
,105(scanner,106(admin),1000(wayne)# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
And this is /etc/fstab:
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb2 / ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/hdb3 /home ext3 defaults 0 2
/dev/hda1 /media/hda1 vfat defaults 0 0
/dev/hdb4 /tmp ext3 defaults 0 2
/dev/hdb1 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy0 auto rw,user,noauto 0 0

I'm not sure what these will have to do with desktop icons:scratch:
In the meantime I,m to repeat what I've done with xorg.conf on my Debian
3.1r1.

Hello All

This is an update.:)
A couple of weeks ago; reinstalled Kubuntu 5.10.
This time didn't run "Complete Update" in Adept.
After reboot, found that Desktop Harddrive Icons
were still enplace. If you're having the same
problem with KDE 3.4.3, might be a good idea to try this.

Hello All

At kdeforums.org I found an easier solution.
Just right-click on the desktop and select
create new>link to device>hard drive. When
the window pops-up, in General tab enter title
and in Device tab left-click on empty box and
select the device that you want the desktop
icon for. click OK and the icon should appear
on your desktop.

Hope this helps:)
