i wanted to try using "/appz/Mozilla Firefox/firefox", but it would show up as not finding "/appz/Mozilla", ignoring the space. I also tried "/appz/Mozilla\ Firefox/firefox" and it didn't work either

Lightbulb I am a newbee too

If you start Firefox then go to the top menu "edit"
From there go to the genral tab about the forth
down you will see Default Browser
Click on the "Check Now" button and I think
It will ask if you want to make it your defalt browser

Why would you run a GNOME config tool if you are using KDE?

What distro are you using?

Try:
Kstart>Control Center>Kde Components>Component Chooser> pick Firefox as your default web browser.

i am using mandrake 10.1 official download and firefox 1.0.4

and none of the options mentioned by craig and stargazer are available

in component chooser i only get 3 options: Email Client, Embedded Text Editor and Terminal Emulator

Found this see if it works:
"Gnome
* Go to "Applications -> Desktop Preferences -> Advanced -> Preferred Applications".
* Select "Custom Web Browser", and type "firefox %s" in the box (Mozilla Suite users susbtitute "firefox" with "mozilla"). Note that a symlink of the "firefox" script must be placed in one of the default PATHs (for example, a symlink of the "firefox" script to "/usr/bin/" is common).

KDE
* Open kcontrol (KDE configuration center)
* Select "Components -> Components chooser"
* Open the "Web browser" component
* Check "The following browser" and type in "firefox" ("mozilla")

If you don't notice the "Web browser" component :
* Select "Components -> file association"
* Select "text -> html" in the MIME type tree.
* Select "Add..." under "Application Preference Order".
* Write the command "firefox %U" and press ok (you need "%U" so you can load URLs that are non-local files)"
