kate in gnome
 

hi,
i have ubuntu and i installed kate in gnome. but when i run kate
i get an error
how to fix it?

Kate is a KDE application. If you are running the Gome desktop, the preferred text editor is Gedit (Applications>Accessories>Test Editor. While sometimes KDE apps run fine in Gnome, sometimes they don't. Gedit is as good or maybe better than Kate.

DCOPserver is a service used by many KDE applications. The most likely cause of this problem is not having one of kate's dependencies installed. Use this command to check to see if you have any broken package dependencies:

apt-get check

P.S. How did you install kate? If you installed it from source or for any reason did not use apt-get then your problem is that you did not install all of kate's dependencies when you installed kate.

Well, you might want to consider installing the KDE desktop if you feel that strongly about these two KDE apps. As I said, you can successfully run some KDE apps in Gnome, but I am not sure how you would diagnose a problem like this. i installed kate from synaptic and i think i install the dependencies with kate. and there is no broken package. anyway can how to install DCOPsever.

What distro are you using? Perhaps it needs some of the KDE utilities installed to give you Kate although I can't actually find it in the package listing and I have used it in the past. I think it's an OK editor but nothing special but everyone is entitled to their own favourite. Personally I do prefer Gedit to Kate.

I'm running Fedora 9 and whilst I don't have Kate installed within Gnome I've just used YUM to install Kile and that seems to run without any issues.

So my suggestion is that you forget Kate and use another simple text editor in its place (Linux has more editors than I can count!) By all means install Kile if you find it's missing - Use your package manager to find it if necessary and enjoy your new system.

You have to make sure that you have the KDE base libraries installed. I suggest you install the entire KDE environment even if you prefer Gnome.

I'm using Kate myself in a Gnome environment (though I'm running Fedora).

Somehow you have one or more missing dependencies or something is not installed properly. KDE's DCOP server should start automatically after user login with a proper installation.

i have ubuntu 7.10. any other way without installing kde... or is there any substitute if kile in gnome?

If you installed Kate through Synaptic, then you should already have dcopserver - it's in the kdelibs4c2a package required by Kate.

Have you tried just running dcopserver manually from a terminal? If you're running GNOME then it probably won't start automatically when you log in. If running dcopserver gives you an error, then it could be a permissions problem. Check that the .DCOPserver* files in your home directory are owned by your user.

Incidentally, does Kate fail to start when you see this error? If it still runs, then you don't need to worry about this. DCOP is for communicating between KDE apps, and if you're only running 1 KDE app at a time, then it's not really needed.
