Kanotix - problem installing

Hi, I couldn't see a board for the Kanotix distro so decided to post this in here if that's right?

Anyway, I desperately want to install Kanotix as it is the only distro (so I'm told) that supports the evil Speedtouch modems without the user compiling anything or doing anything complicated.

So I downloaded their ISO, burnt the image to disk, boot up from it ok, chose the first English setting and then when it started extracting (or at least tried to) I got lots of I/O errors and then at the end of it all, this final message displayed:

....................................................................................................

/linuxrc: 772: cannot create /var/tar/vfs: cannot open root device <NULL> or unknown-block (3,2)
Please append a correct "root" boot option
Kernal panic not syncing :vfs: unable to mount root FS on unknown -block (3,2)

....................................................................................................

What does it mean and what can I do about it?

I know the first thing they suggest over on the kanotix forums with boot problems is to make sure you have a good burn. Next time you boot, on the options line in grub menu, use the code "testcd". It will a while for it to boot as it is checking the md5sums of all the files on the CD but that will eliminate one possibility.

Ok I burnt a new CD which worked fine until I got to a grey screen with a black "X" as a cursor, I could move the cursor about, but that was all that was happening, nothing else. I waited for a while and still nothing?

well, ideally you would have watched the boot up with the "testcd" option to make sure it gave you the all "OK" (it would still continue to boot even if it wasn't ok)

There is a similar post to yours on the kanotix forum at this time, perhaps it is your post? I think there is a rule about posting links to other sites here, I may be wrong. Mods: if I am breaking a rule, please pardon me - I am not sure if it is ok to post this link:

In spite of the nd5sum check affirming my download of Kanotix, and the install going smoothly, the resultant install had major problems - i.e.
no automount or autorun of CDROM, even in root mode, library install eroor message on trying to run Kaffeine, unable to run executables from CD in root mode, and gradual bogging down of system (memory usage) the longer it ran.
Finally, dumped Kanotix and installed Xandros. Whle I don't like commercialized Distros, it has, so far, given no problems.
Seems that some of the community distro's are written hy a psycho variant of the visurs composers, whose delight in life is the thought of you installing their wares, and then spending your spare timne trying to fix your system instead of using it!

Kanotix works just fine for me. Which version did you download?

I have been running it on my desktop for over two years and on my laptop for almost a year.

One problem I did find is that qtparted that comes with it doesn't seem to work correctly so I used a PCLinuxOS livecd to format and create my partitions.

Then the install went just fine.

The Kanotix manual or the wiki are great places to look for help. Or the offcial Kanotix forum, Kano the developer even posts answers in the forum.
