Kali Freezes all the time

Hi,

Previously I had installed VMware Player 6.0.1 with Kali 1.0.6 without any issues. I decided to upgrade both with a clean install to VMware Player 6.0.2 with Kali 1.0.7. Now Kali freezes on me a couple of times a day. When it freezes the light on my caps lock blinks and the only way I can get out is to close VMware Player. Is anybody able to give me some advice on how to fix this. I have reinstalled these again but the same thing. I am a newbie so be gentle.

Could you be a bit more specific. Does the OS load? Do you see any error messages when booting? Also, you are refering to Kali linux the predecessor to backtrack, correct?

Sorry for the lack of details. I have Windows 8 installed on my laptop so in order to run Kali Linux (yes the predecessor to backtrack) I use VMware. So I load up VMware then load Kali inside and it loads perfectly. I use it like normal, then for no reason it just lock up. I cant click on any of the tabs or close it unless I manually close VMware. I haven't found any pattern to when it locks up it just seems to be random. The only thing have noticed is the Caps Lock light blinking when it freezes.

Thanks for responding.

Well...The simplest solution would be to try virtualbox instead of VMware. My guess is something changed in the Kali linux kernel or VMware causing the conflict. Are you able to get into a shell by hitting ctrl+alt then a F# key. Like Ctrl+Alt+F4. If you can posting the xorg log file in /var/log/Xorg.0.log this might give some insight into what is happening.

Thanks pople,

When Kali locks up, Ctrl+Alt+F4 doesn't work. So when Kali locked up I manually closed VMware to close Kali so the log below is from when I next booted up Kali In. Any help is appreciated.

Had the same problem recently. To fix that just re-generate the vmware config. Given you have vmware tools already installed, just run vmware-config-tools.pl it should be in your PATH. Follow the suggested answers and then reboot. It worked like a charm for me.

well have "fun" trying to use the CUDA tools that make Kali what Kali is on a VM

i for one would not want to have use one cpu cycle instead of 1024 cuda cores

running a hash on ONE CPU will take YEARS AND YEARS -- have fun
