K3B problem

The version of k3b that came with SuSe 9.0 didn't support the mp3 format for writing audio CDs, I have downloaded the latest k3b rpm from the SuSe site and installe dit using YaST 2.

It seems that all the dependancies are OK and I have confirmed the new rpm is installed.But.... when I try and run the prog from the desktop it starts to load and I see the splash screen but it closes with no messages. So I tried running it from a console ad get the following...

mike@linux:~> k3b
mike@linux:~> mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, over riding
WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!
k3b: relocation error: k3b: undefined symbol: _ZN11KMainWindow4showEv

Can anyone suggest what this means and what to do next?

On a more general note I'm sure Im not the only Linux newbie who has problems like this which can be infuriating when the installation seems to have worked but the prog just wont run!

Still beats M$ any day of the week.

Thanks.

Earlier versions of K3b hat a setup program. Did you run that?

In answer to the first reply (thanks for that by the way), I haven't tried using the prog. you suggested but I have tried "cdbakeoven" this seems to recognise mp3 format files, but when I try and burn a disk something very odd happens..... I end up with a disk which has the correct number of tracks and duration but when I play it I just get static and hiss.

Do you reckon this indicates that there is osmething more fundamentalk wrong than the software I am trying to use to burn a disk? As it stands k3b will not even start and cdbakeoven says it is working fine, gives no error messages but produces disks full of static crap.

Please help me despairing and having to go back to windows!

You didn't answer my question. The reason I asked is permissions ... normal users of some (most?) distributions have no permission to write to the CD-burner. The setup (of my K3b) created a new group which has write-permission ... so, what is with your setup?

I got this prob as well. I think I sorted it by

* installing an older version of k3b
* uprgrade qt to qt-3.2.2 and/or kde-3.2.0

Least that's how I remember it. Will be reinstalling Slack tonight so I expect it'll come back to me.

Well.... In order to sort this problem with k3b I have tried almost everything I ca think of. Yesterday I upgraded KDE from 3.1.4 to 3.2.2, I used all the rpms from the SuSe site and also the suse rpm for the latest version of k3b.

Everything works well until I try and burn but then I get a message telling me effectively that i dont have permission to burn a disk. So I tried running k3b as root but still no luck. Even when I log in as root and run from there I get the same message.

This is starting ti get silly!

Hmm.... When I run k3b as normal user I get permission problems... here's the output of the debug.

System
-----------------------
K3b Version: 0.11.7
KDE Version: 3.2.2
QT Version: 3.3.1

cdrdao
-----------------------
Cdrdao version 1.1.7-suse - (C) Andreas Mueller <andreas@daneb.de>
SCSI interface library - (C) Joerg Schilling
Paranoia DAE library - (C) Monty
Check http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/drives.html#dt for current driver tables.
Using libscg version 'schily-0.7'
0,0,0: IOMEGA ZIPCD1024INT-A Rev: 1.1
Using driver: Generic SCSI-3/MMC - Version 2.0 (options 0x0010)
Starting write at speed 4...
Process can be aborted with QUIT signal (usually CTRL-\).
WARNING: No super user permission to setup real time scheduling.
ERROR: Cannot set write parameters mode page.
ERROR: Cannot setup write parameters for session-at-once mode.
ERROR: Please try to use the 'generic-mmc-raw' driver.
ERROR: Writing failed.

cdrdao comand:
-----------------------
/usr/bin/cdrdao write --device 0,0,0 --driver generic-mmc:0x00000010 --speed 4 -n -v 2 --eject --remote 23 /tmp/kde-mike/k3b_audio_6_.toc

So how do I set it to run with root permissions? I tried the option of making the desktop icon run as another user but get the message "kdeini tcould not start kdesu" or similar...

When you run k3b there's a selection under tools (or summat else, can't remember but it''s on the toolbar which says 'k3b setup'. If you run that it should ask for root password and should set correct permissions for your devices.

Hmmm.... Under the settings there is a "Configure k3b"option, but this has no mention of running the app. as root.

Just tried running k3b from a console and got the following output:

mike@linux:~> k3b: WARNING: KGenericFactory: instance requested but no instance name passed to the constructor!

Does this mean anything to anyone. I really appreciate your patience for trying to help with this, I'm sure we'll work it out eventually!

Mike, can only suggest you remove the k3b you have and download the 0.8 version here

Finally got it to work!!!!

Downloaded the latest rpms for k3b, couldn't ./configure because there was a problem with qt-mt, downloaded qt source and installed it. (took an hour to./configure!) Tried k3b again and it worked.

Only thing is I've wasted so many CDs trying to make it work as it should that Ive now got no blanks left!
