justin_p, I am ready for that advice about the US Robotics modem now

I am back and have made some progress. But i see that the
Fedora Core external modem problems seem to be pandemic!

Here's how much I've been able to do:

In sequence, here's what I did

Greetings from Linux Konqueror. K fired where mozilla would not..
any suggestions on that?

I am continuing a bit with the Negus book and

using /etc/resolvconfig [as root]

I got a 'permission denied' error.

Also in this browser, it does not seem to CR (carriarge return)
down the screen. I have to use the slider to advance downward to complete the message when I am out of 'screen room'.

Too weird.

You might want to check this thread:

Dialup connection issues

I use a USR 56K Performance Pro Modem model 5610B and on the side panel of the package it came in under "Minimum System Requirements" was listed:

Linux (Kernel 2.3 and higher). Hope this helps.

hey, glad you made it back, sorry if i ticked you off a little. Anyhow, how is the configuration going? When i hooked up my external modem, the fc network device control would not recognize it for whatever reason. All i had to do was hook it up to /dev/ttys0. That was it. I had to use network device control in gnome to bring up the interface. That should work with your standard FC set up. Make sure all your software is up to date. If this doesn't help post back and we'll keep at it.
