Just some help on downloading Debian
Hello,
I'm planning on downloading Debian via torrents @ http://www.debian.org/CD/torrent-cd/. Just wanted to verify the following 1. To download Debian for a 64 bit amd athlon I've got to use the link which reads [amd64] 2. To download Debian for a 64 bit Intel Core2Quad I've got to use the link which reads [ia64] 3. And to download Debian for any cpu I use the link which reads [alpha] Am I right here? Just confirming - Using a slow internet connection and it takes hours without doing anything else on the net to download a large file - so being on the safe side before downloading :) |
Typically an i386 version will work on almost any cpu. but for the 64 bit versions you are correct.

Not quite. Alpha is a separate CPU architecture altogether; not X86 compatible. The 'i386' package should run on any X86 CPU. There is no distribution which is totally CPU independent.

USE AMD64 FOR CORE 2 DUO!
amd64, aka x86_64, is actually the architecture used in most Intel CPUs. ia64 is just for intel Itanium CPUs. |
Thanks a lot
