Just installed Suse 10.0 - Grub error message.

Hi,
I have just installed Suse 10.0 from a DVD, onto my external hard drive, for a dual boot with Windows XP. After the installation, Suse rebooted, and I selected 'boot from hard disk' from the Suse menu. I recieved this error message:

Grub Loading Stage 1.5
Grub loading, please wait...

Error 16

Now I can't boot into either Suse or Windows. I am new to Linux, and I'm not sure what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Stephen

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.

Well first of all, let me congratulate you on not losing it completely. REMAIN CALM! Your windows partition is still there. All you have to do is rewrite the MBR (master boot record) to get your Windows back. To do this, you just boot with an XP recovery disk, or whatever, and choose the "REPAIR" option. I think the command for rewriting the MBR is "FIXMBR".

The reason it didn't work is that the bootloader probably couldn't detect your external hard drive because it is, after all, only a bootloader. The hardware detection comes at a later stage. It can't see past the USB hub or something like that. Whatever, DON'T GIVE UP!! The learning curve is a little steeper than Windows, but the rewards are there!

Good luck!
