I just installed Linux Mandrake 8.2 on a 20 GB IDE HD. I have it dual booted with XP Pro (XP of course installed first). I don't have any questions about my install procedure or partions. I followed the user manual install instructions for an expert install. Everything went fine as far as I can tell. However, after I restarted following the MDK install, I choose "Linux" from the Lilo boot screen. After about 2 minutes of a bunch of writing (like my technical terms? haha), I get prompt: "dhcppc5 login:" I typed in my user name, then a "password:" prompt appears, in which I can type nothing (no letters or numbers). I installed directly from CD-ROM. My other boot options in Lilo, for the record, are: Linux non-fb, floppy, NT (XP on NTFS partition), and I think that's it. Any input? Any follow-up questions for me? I'd appreciate your help. Thanks
i'm not quite sure what the problem acutally is... the dhcppc5 name will presumably come from an ugly host name given to you from your isp / lan, and can change later.... you created a user when you installed yes? so log in as that... or log in as root with the root password you set. the keyboard response is not shown at the password prompt, as.. it's a password prompt.
ok, I just re-installed MDK 8.2, this time in Recommended mode, just to make sure I didn't make a mistake in configuring expert setup. I still get Lilo boot options: Linux, Linux-nonfb, floppy, NT, failsafe. I choose "Linux", then the message "Press <ENTER> to display video modes, press SPACE BAR to continue, or wait 30 seconds." I press space bar, get "Press 'I' followed by <ENTER> to enter interactive startup." I let the boot process continue, and I still get:<p>
I've tried my root password, I've tried my user login/password... when I type in my user name, I get "password:" to which I have no input control (as if my keyboard is broken).<p>
"password:" to which I have no input control (as if my keyboard is broken).
Are you sure it's not accepting anything? Does it not show a cursor of any kind? Have you just tried typing in your password and the Enter key to see if it takes?
If that doesn't work, then let us know some hardware details, motherboard, BIOS, any unusual hardware (i.e., USB keyboard), etc.
There's undoubtedly an answer, we just need to find the right question .
" I've tried my root password, I've tried my user login/password... when I type in my user name, I get "password:" to which I have no input control (as if my keyboard is broken)."
you said this last time... what do you MEAN? keys you press will NOT show up. not even *'s in their place, that is CORRECT. pressing enter there has no effect? try changing to a different console window with alt+F2 to F6
