Just installed Linux to no avail

I just installed Linux which I do not know what I have done as I am a linux newcomer. I used a command from one of the posted answers here and now it will not boot into Linux. It starts but ends up at a black screen. Here is the command I entered to install Linux because it would not recognize the cd drive: linux all-generic-ide irqpoll pc:=nommconf

now as I said it will not boot into Linux. What is the next step for me to get a good install?

Which linux distribution are you trying to install? I used to have similar problems installing some of the distros. There are ways of installing linux over network, or from another partition of your hd - look for instructions on this particular distro website. You can also try another distro. It happens to me on Ubuntu 8.04 - 7.10 worked fine. Fedora and Debian work without problems - cd rom gets recognised.

I have done some searching and I assume that my distribution is Redhat. There is also am message on the screen that says:

"kernel panic not syncing Attempted to kill init!"

redhat? If you are going to use linux on your personal computer at home, I would recommend ubuntu or pclinuxos. They are much more user friendly for linux beginners.

Which version is it? Does it say any number?

This is something about network installs.

I have installed it but it just will not boot to Linux. Here is the info I think you were asking for.

RedHat Enterprise is a distribution intended for businesses and other large organizations. It requires a paid subscription to get updates and support. You will be far better off with one of the many free versions.

The "getting started" link below may be useful.

Ooops, sorry, for some reason I misread your initial post, and then was convinced it is the installation that you have problems with, my apologies.

Check this link - it might help:

Can you explain this a little? Where are you trying to install this? On a server at work? Or on a personal computer of your own?

Hey thanks for all of the information. It is a server install. I have got the problem fixed now. What I had to do is add a line to the grub.conf file following the kernel information. I had to add the "linux all_generic-ide" and now it boots right up. I am not able use the server. If there is anything else I need to do then please share. Thank you all for you help and this is a great avenue for us Linux newbies. You will get more questions from me as I continue to learn more about Linux. I next have to install Lotus Domino. If you have any experience with this share please. Thanks again and God bless.
