Just a couple of questions about VPS "hosting"

Hello.

I'm back after some unsuccessful installs with arch linux on my desktop at work. I'm now an everyday linux user.

Thanks for recommendations, arch linux punched me in the face until i learned something.

Now. I'm looking into learning something about VPS.

I have a rackmounted server which i'm going to turn into virtual machines.

To the questions:
What is the common term for everything VPS?
Please fill in "... for dummies"

What free alternatives are there with great documentation?

From start, what kind of software do i need to install on the server in order to virtualise and manage the virtual servers?
Are there respective terms for virtualising and managing this kind of systems?

Thats all i can think of for now, i hope my questions are easy to answer.

Hello,

Vps (virtual private server) is used in a large network to make multiple computers out of one. Any Linux server can do it and you can do it from home.

I have found a website that should be able to answer most of your questions

http://www.simple-talk.com/sysadmin/...t-environment/
http://www.linuxforu.com/2012/02/wor...-debian-linux/ .

Hope it helps at least a little,

Thanks for the reply.

So i guess VPS is a good enough term to describe the whole thing. After looking into it myself i now know i should do it the CentOS way. Regardless, your link should provide for a good enough read in order to find the equivalent guides for a CentOs environment.
