I managed to get Icedtea on there, but its 6b20-1.9.9-0ubuntu1~10.04.2 (openjdk-6-jre).
Its not the correct version unfortunately.

What do you mean? Does the software run? To he honest, some systems here run 6u21 happily...

What wersion is required?

For Minecraft to run smoothly it requires the newest version of Java on there. I'm back on my Windows box for now to take a break because I've been working on this for a good 9-10 hours now.
