JetDirect in Slackware...

Hi All,
I'm trying to setup my LaserJet 5L hooked up through a 3 port JetDirect box.

I'm running Slackware 10 and have Cups somewhat working. I can get a test page to print from the Cups Admin website but can't seem to figure out how to get anything else to print.

I'm not totally new to linux...although I've been running Red Hat and Fedora so I've been some what sheltered. I've been running Slackware for about 4 days now and I'm just starting to get everything how I like it

Any help is greatly appreciated!

This is just an educated guess:

Setting the Default Printer

Run the lpadmin command with the -d option to set a default printer:

/usr/sbin/lpadmin -d printer ENTER

The default printer can be overridden by the user using the lpoptions(1) command.
Once that's done all printing should go to that printer ...

Cheers,
Tink

Hmmm...well, it seems that I'm not doing something right...here are the steps I've been taking.

Boot up.
Jump into terminal -
su
cupsd
lpadmin -d LaserJet

from there I'll jump into some program and try to print to lpr. Nothing happens. If I try to print from the command line with:
lpr -d LaserJet -o PaperSize=Letter /etc/motd

I get this:
Status Information, attempt 1 of 3:
sending job 'root@linuxbox+988' to LaserJet@localhost
connecting to 'localhost', attempt 1
cannot open connection to localhost - No such file or directory
Make sure the remote host supports the LPD protocol
Waiting 10 seconds before retry

On the "flip side" if I go into the Cups Admin panel and click "Print Test Page" I get a beautiful print out

It seems like Cups talks to the printer just fine...but nothing talks to Cups.

Slackware just made me into a

Thanks for the Reply!

Next thing ... did you do a compete install of Slack?

One very common mistake of n00bs is to install both
cups and lprng. If you have, you need to remove both,
and only re-install cups.

Tinkster - Yes, it is a complete install...I didn't install lprng, that is unless it did it for me...I'll check on that and let you know

Thanks!

JetDirect in Fedora Core 2

I also had the problem where i could print a test page but no other programs could print. I did the lpadmin -d printer thing. But how do I find out if I have the CUPS or the LPrng installed?
And which ever print server is installed, I should select it in the other programs?
I have been switching between print servers to see which works...of course none do.
