Java with Firefox and Limewire

I wanted to install Java so that I could install Limewire and do other things in Firefox. So I downloaded the .bin file, opened up Konsole, logged in as root, and typed ./j2re... and it seemed to install fine. But when I try to install Limewire, it doesn't think I have Java installed. What did I do wrong, or what went wrong? Also, it doesn't work in Firefox.

Heres the message I get when trying to install Limewire

Code:
$ ./LimeWireLinux.bin
Preparing to install...
Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this systems environment...
No Java Virtual Machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program
$

The java has to be in your PATH. If you open the konsole and type 'java' and you get the usage screen, then it is in your path and it is some other problem. If typing 'java' results in 'command not found', then the java is not in your PATH. To add java to your PATH, first figure out where it is (/opt/java for example). To put /opt/java in your PATH type 'export PATH=$PATH:/opt/java'
To make this permanent, add that line to the /etc/profile or ~/.bashrc text files.

I don't know where to find it. I installed Java to /home/simon/j2re1.4.2_06. Would it be in there?

Take a look at this thread.Go to post 30, you may find it useful for installing LimeWire on Mandrake or Fedora Core.

if just used the version that slackware installs for firefox you need a symlink to the java plugin. and like the guy above said the java executable needs to be in your path so limewire installer can find it.

this may be different for you but you will get the idea. cd to firefox's plugin directory

ln -s /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

for limewire just type which java in console will tell you if its in your path if its not you need to add javas bin dir to your path.
