Java Plug-in will not work
 

I downloaded the java plug-in from suns web site and did the install and after it finished I opened foxfire and tried using it but it would not work.

I have tried to get java to work on different linux boxes but have never had any luck. What am i doing wrong?

Navigate to your Java directory and look for a folder called plugin(Mine is /usr/lib/SunJava2**.*/jre/plugin/desktop/i386/ns10)
and make a link to thiis file from the pluginin directory of your browser.

how exactly did you install the plugin?

for firefox and mozilla, you need to make a link to the plugin from the java directory, not actually copy the file to the plugin folder, otherwise the browser will crash

I have looked at the how to but it did not work.

I installed jdk1.5.0 in /usr/local like the sun web site told me to do.
I rm the java, javac, and jar files from the /usr/bin and created links to the /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin for java after it did not work I also crated links for javac and jar.

I found the plugins folder for firefox in /usr/lib/firefox-1.0/plugins and created the link showed in the how to doc.
ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

I just don't get it. it should work.

Would it be to much to ask for linux browsers to be more user friendly!

What did I do wrong?

There is another plugin in /i386. Try that one. ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Ok it works!

Here is a recap for any one else that has been following this and hoping to get java to work.

The How to document is a good document The problem I was having is I already had install jdk1.5.0 before I read it and did not do a RPM install but did a .bin install
so the paths was a little different.

What I did to get java to work is:

I downloaded jdk1.5.0 from sun's web site the one I got was the .bin
I cd to /usr/local as root and ran the downloaded file while in that directory so it would install there. After it was finished installing I went to /usr/bin and deleted java, javac and jar just like in the how to. I then made a symbolic link for java from /usr/bin to /usr/local/bin while in the /usr/bin directory the command is
# ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/bin/java java

after that I had to make one more link I cd to /usr/lib/foxfire-1.0/plugins
and made the link below

# ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

after that I closed all browsers opened one back up and the went to a java web site to test it.
It Worked.

one note: on my box I had to use the ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so plugin not the ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so plugin.

What a pain it was though.

I'm glad you got it to work! :) (but you're still missing the path to the firefox plugin folder in you ln -s command in your recap :p )
