Adding --with-extra-library-path=/usr/lib/mysql was the correct thing to do so that shouldn't be the cause.

I get the connection refused message in my logs as well but the connection is re-attempted and established later on. Do you have nmap? When I scan the box running jabber here I have the following ports open and in use by jabber; 5222, 5223, 5269 & 5347. If those ports are open on your box then jabber has started correctly and the problem may be elsewhere.

Jabber server works. But error 404 appears again when I'm tring to send a message from one user to another. There are the following errors are in /var/log/messages:
Quote:
jabberd/resolver[2802]: [test] could not be resolved
jabberd/s2s[2804]: dns lookup for test failed
Can they be caused by the fact that I use IP address instead of hostname in sm.xml and c2s.xml? Is there any way to make Jabber work with IP addresses?

Jabber works just fine with IP addresses instead of hosts. When you set up a new jabber user on the box, you set them up as user@ip-address, not user@host and it takes care of everything else.
