ISP thingy

Is there such thing as operating system compatibility issue concerning ISP connections? (ISP's not accepting connections from remote PCs powered by UNIX-based OS, but only windows)?

ksgill 10-24-2003 09:31 PM

yes there is.

Not that I know of. Except for certain ISP's that provide a specialized service like satalitte internet such as "DirectWay" I believe this service is windows only and does not support all protocol (e.g. SSH). You have to ask your ISP. What kind of connection are we talking about? (Dialup, DSL, or CABLE?)

It's not a company...it's a kind of connection sir, since you've asked what are we talking about. (proper nouns should start with a capital letter, did I?)

My bad, I read kind of fast. Sorry to be confusing. I understood it's dialup. As far as I know dialup is standard and you should NOT have any capabilty issues.

flipboi 10-24-2003 10:13 PM

Thanks a lot, sir. :)

Many dialup ISPs (AOL, Netzero, others) like to use non-standard protocols, that don't work on linux.

If your ISP uses the standard - PPP (point to point protocol), then it will work fine anywhere (thats why its a standard)
