ISP headaches
 

Hey all,

When I just started out with Linux, took me FOREVER to get any sort of Internet connection established. Invested in a serial modem, finally got it to work with my ISP, and then they went and changed their server.

Essentially, it would connect me, but then the connection would essentially be dead. Connected, not sending/receiving. But this was hit or miss -- some days it would work, but most of the time it would just sit there, useless. Tried tinkering with settings in both KPP and Internet, but with my limited knowledge of Linux I have no idea what I'm doing.

Well, that ISP also started to block simultaneous log-ins, and my brother in-law insists on using it for hours on end to download MP3's, so I found myself another ISP. This one claims to support Linux, although they do not offer tech support, and I am having the same problem. Connects fine in both KInternet and KPP, just doesn't TX/RX. All I get are little spikes of activity showing in the connection display -- I believe they're only Send Data spikes. In KPP I've tried every possible setting I can think of, including a log-in script matching what the server is asking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying very hard to get away from the Microsoft world.. but I just can't get even the most basic things working. :/

dont feel bad noone here anywhere in this damn god forsaken state supports linux except redhat and to get a tech from there if you didnt buy ur os from them u need to be god himself

Well, here I am in Linux, online and zipping along. I don't get it. Gave up about three hours ago, watched a DVD here in KDE (had been trying to connect in Gnome), thought I'd give it one more shot before going back into Windows to work... bingo. *Any* idea why this would happen?

PPS- Why can't I get sounds for gAim while I'm in KDE??

not really other than your ISP server was having issues with the server lines whatever it maybe if it continues to happen call them (should be 24hr tech service) and say look it works than stops working and than poof its back up its not a "linux thing". whenever you say to an isp or tech that doesnt know linux they get scared and their manuals or whatever they use to read ur issue to you doesnt coover linux. i got my isp to learn a llil while setting up kmail. i needed the host name and i walked them through a few web pages so they can see what i needed to do. ive had very very bad luck with external dial up modems they are nightmare to me the internal ones and the external dsl modems never givin me an issue really.

I called the ISP earlier this afternoon, told them what was going on, and was impressed when the rep said "hang on while I boot up Linux here." But then I lost all hope when he ignored my questions regarding configuring KPP or KInternet and said that, by simply plugging in their stupid domain info and clearing out the cache, history, etc. everything would work.

What ever happened to tech support that isn't totally dumbed down or way over your head? I remember a time when it was middle of the road. Oh well..

PS- Got the sounds to work in Gaim <g>

thats where microsoft products come in they are so user friendly the techs have to talk to you like that
