Is wine harmful, can it affect my computer with Virus??????


Hello everyone, I have install wine software on rhel 5 and use it. but I have a thought if this software run the .exe software of windows then it will also run the virus files.

Is it ?

Is it harmful ?

Yes, one could expose their data to some malware by using wine. I think this is on the winehq faq.

To simply say that malware doesn't run in wine is very simplistic.

It is more simplistic to say that linux is somehow safe.

Each day there are patches to all sorts of code both in linux and windows. Each day someone exposes a threat to data in every OS. There are only ways to limit exposure. All those ways tend to be termed best practices.

A best practice would be to run wine in limited user privilege on a secured system that is fully updated and has limited physical access.
