Hi.

Welcome to LQ.

The best source for this information appears to be the Distro Release Announcement linked from CentOS's home page. This states:

Quote:
CentOS-5.2 is based on the upstream release EL 5.2.0, and includes packages from all variants including Server and Client.
So yes, CentOS-5.2 is based on RHEL 5.2.0. Note that a while back (last couple years?) Red Hat lawyers sent CentOS a cease and desist letter accusing them of trademark infringement. In response, CentOS now generally avoids mentioning Red Hat, instead using phrases like "a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor." But if you follow their links for where they get their source code, it is clear that the source is Red Hat. The CentOS team then removes any tradmarks and other materials they can't freely distrute and compile the result. While they aim to be "100% binary compatible" be aware that some changes were necessary to redistribute. But note that they also state that "CentOS conforms fully with the upstream vendors redistribution policy," which they give the link to somewhere on their site. (Sorry, I closed some tabs in too much haste and am too lazy to go back and find all of these links.)

Most drivers are part of the kernel source code tree and should come with the distribution. If you need a driver that is not part of the kernel source and can't locate it, please let us know what it is. Edit: But please note the relevant quote (by Mark Shuttleworth) in my signature about such drivers.
