Is this a valid process

I used TOP to see what was running and noticed this that looked strange, nothing that I could find pointed one way or another.....Im not running any severs and have nothing that should be accessing the internet except for normal web browsing and GAIM. Is this something to be concerned about??

943 rpc 9 0 532 532 464 S 0.0 0.2 0:00.00 portmap

its required by NFS clients/servers. i would have thought mandrake was SYSV so have a look in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory and write down the names of any scripts with the name NFS, portmap, tcpwrappers in it, then remove all links to these scripts in the /etc/rc.d/rc?.d directories. if you need help with it post back.

there is more than likely a mandrake specific tool to do this but i wouldnt know about that.

Thank you for your help I will look into that...Does that mean that this shouldn't be running??

Is this something to be concerned about???

Ive done searches that say basicaly the same thing that the process is for NFS remote client/servers...I killed it and everything still is working fine.... Nothing really says if it SHOULD be running on Mandrake 9.1...

Can someone with Mdk 9.1 check and see if this process is running on your system??

its not drastic that its running because im sure you have some sort of firewall, but if you dont use it then its better not to run it. rpm distros have a nasty habbit of running lots of services by default that you dont want so im sure alot of other people will be running it as well.
