Question Is there anything in Linux like Volume Shadow Copy Service in Windows?

Hi, I'm trying to determine if there is anything in the Linux server operating system that provides the same functionality as Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) in Windows. In Windows VSS acts as a coordinator between requesters, providers, and applications to ensure integrity of snapshots. Basically it makes sure that snapshots include and don't get corrupted by open or active files. Any information you can provide on this kind of functionality in Linux (or Unix for that matter!) would be very helpful.

thanks,

wchinook
