is the intel 915 chipset supported?
 

Hi,
I'm buying a new machine and it looks like the intel 915 is the latest all in one motherboard... anyone know if drivers exist for the onboard goodies?? (Intel GMA 900 Graphics, onboard sound and lan)

I'm thinking of either Mandrake (10) or suse (whatever the latest version is)

hi zewsk, welcome to lq. i believe that chipset is supported. almost certain on the video, loook here

for the sound and ethernet, the sound is most likely supported by alsa, and intel has good support for ethernet. hope that helps.

ha ha! you know it seems that linux runs on just about anything now... <strike me down now but...> it's kind of like where windows was about 5 years ago... I'm going to say a "hail mary" and buy the damn thing and hope for the best... worst case scenario is I'll have to wait a few months before I get a driver customized for that chipset... thx. Z.

i915 how to do ?
 

I have a ASUS p5gdc-v deluxe motherboard with the i915g chipset.
I have also seen that intel claims the chipset is supported, but untill now I have had no luck getting sound to work.
Here is what I have tried so far:
Installed mandrake 10.0 community : Could not detect the onboard graphics, installed without GUI, and no networking.
I tried upgrading the kernel and downloading intels driver, as well as a driver from syskonnect for the NIC, but couldn't get anything to work.
Then I tried mandrake 10.1 rc1 but was not any closer to success.
Finally I heard of a Server from HP with the i915g chipset and that one was running Suse. Therefore I installed Suse 9.1 pro, and tried again.

Currnet status: I have networking up and running (installed the patch from syskonnect for a 2.6.4-54 kernel (recommended by intel) and also on a 2.6.9-rc2 kernel, because the newer kernel were supposed to have full support for the i915 chipset.
I have successfully compiled the intel driver, but don't know how to use it, even if i modprobe the driver (or the i915 driver from the kernel) the system can't detect the onboard sound, and I have only 800x600 frame buffer graphics.
I have searched the internet in frustration trying to find out how to unlock the full potential of this motherboard with linux, but as yet I've made only little progress.

Any help is appreciated.

New chipset support problems, especially if they are Intel chipsets it is just a matter of time before it is fully supported.

I also have a 915 based machine that I'm keen to run Linux on. Its the Intel D915GAV motherboard.
It has the GMA900 graphics chip, Intel 10/100 NIC, a SATA controller, dual channel DDR 400 memory, onboard audio etc.
First I tried Red Hat 9, it didn't recognise the SATA drive at all (2.4 kernel I think). Then tried Fedora Core 2. That had SATA support and installed successfully, although it didn't recognise the graphics (Vesa only) or the sound at all. Interestingly at this point I only had 1 dimm in the board (512MB) so the memory was single channel. Now I have 2 in (1024MB) and the memory is dual channel and I can't install Fedora (or Suse 9.1, or Mandrake 10.1) at all. The system hangs during all three setups!
I've tested all my memory with the latest version of Memtest, so I don't think its dodgy memory.
Does Linux support dual channel memory?
With single channel memory I also got Suse 9.1 running, although other than the SATA disk and the NIC it didn't recognise much of the hardware.
Even got Kylix to install on Suse, but it wouldn't run (my final goal). Now that I've got a Gig of memory nothing installs so I'm pretty dejected at the moment.
Any advice will be gratefully received.

I recently purchaced the Intel D915PCY with the 915P chipset and I cannot get Linux of any flavour to recognize all four SATA hard drives. Two? No problem. Only Windows XP will recognize all four hard drives. The BIOS indicates that the drives are in a master/slave configuration (listed as PM, PS, SM, & SS). Would this have anything to do with it? I don't know. If you're still waffling and are hoping to use more than two SATA drives you may want to reconsider. On the other hand, if anyone can enlighten me as to what my problem may be please feel free to give me a clue.

I've only got a single SATA drive, so I can't comment on your problems.

However, having sat and thought about my previous post, and the question of whether the switch from single dual channel memory caused my problems I thought I'd try dropping the bus speed from 400MHz to 333MHz.
Suse 9.1 loaded and ran fine!
Given that Kernel 2.6 is supposed to support hyperthreading you'd think it would support Intel's hyperthreading chipsets.
Anybody able to make a stab at explaining this? I certainly can't!

When you wrote"Suse 9.1 loaded and ran fine!", did you mean that you have graphics and hd audio working too ?

I still haven't gotten it to work (haven't tried a lot since my previous posting either though), but if you actually
have everything then maybe it's time to try again.

No, sorry to disappoint you. I only meant that the system was stable and didn't hang during boot up or while running Apps.

The ALSA audio driver doesn't work on the 915 motherboard, at least the one I bought from Fry's. My friends working at Intel say that they are working to fix the audio driver and also the graphics driver. They will post the new drivers as soon as they are ready. I can update this forum when they are ready. fyi...

I have also purchased a PC having Intel's P-IV 3.0 Ghz processor and D915GAV motherboard. The hard disk is Seagate Burracuda 80 Gb having SATA interface. Memory is dual channel DDR of 512 MB. I have successfully installed Suse 9.1. It recognized my SATA hard drive. The Kernel version of 2.6.x. is necessary for SATA hard drive recognition. I have also successfully run SimplyMEPIS live CD using 2.6.x kernel. The only problem I am facing is with the on board sound card. Though I have not yet tested the LAN card on-board.
I have downloaded, compiled and installed the sound card driver from Intel's site for Suse 9.1, but the sound output is distorted. Please let me know any fix for the said sound card. I am ready to install any distribution of Linux.

Your 915 audio is probably scratchy and noisy, right? If so, you need a couple of patches that are included in the Novell Linux Desktop 9 driver that is on Intel's website as of last week. See http://developer.intel.com/design/mo...v/av_drive.htm for the NLD9 audio driver. You should be able to rebuild the driver source for your SuSE system or the RPM binary install might work just fine.

Also, for the onboard 10/100 LAN should work just fine with SuSE 9.1.
