Is it recommended to run system updates on a Virtual machine?
 

So I'm running Linux Mint 17 on Virtualbox on a Windows 7 64-bit computer. Recently I used apt-get upgrade to run recommended updates on my Linux. However after the updates the system is now running on software rendering mode(Even though 3D acceleration is enabled). Now my question is, if I had done the updates using update manager instead of the terminal would this have been avoided, or should one just simply not run updates to a virtual machine?

The update manager uses the same low level commands as the termimal ( apt-get/dpkg ) so it makes no difference, I only use vbox for testing software on differenr systems before I release it so I always keep the virtual machines up to date, you may need to periodically re-run the vbox tools from within the virtual machine, this has fixed a couple of problems for me before.

One caveat is that if you're running VirtualBox, then the version of the Virtualbox Guest Extensions used by your guest should match the version of VirtualBox running on the host. If your guest distribution includes the Virtualbox Guest Extensions in its repositories then you need to deal with that.

Are the Guest Additions required for 3d acceleration? If so, did your system update include an updated kernel? If so, then you need to reinstall the Guest Additions. Just go through the same process as before to insert the Guest Additions image, mount it in the guest, install, etc.

I always keep my guests up to date, never had an issue.

Something happened. Software updates usually do OK on vm's.

Generally you should keep all OS's up to date.
