I think you can upgrade. If you insert the FC2 CD and boot the computer, it will detect that you are running an older version of redhat and ask you if you want to upgrade or perform a fresh install. If you select upgrade, it will search for all packages that need to be upgraded. I had redhat9 but did not upgrade. I ended up doing a fresh install. hope that helps

that's a hell of a jump. Try back up your vital data (/home/user) and then do a fresh install. That's the way that i would go.

That's a big leap, you are a brave soul if you try it.
I'm a coward, so I didn't even upgrade from Redhat 9 to Fedora Core1. I made a complete reinstall.
I don't even know if documents created with some applications ( Abiword, gimp, blender or gnucash ) that were included with RH8 can be processed with the same one in the Fedora 2, they have been upgraded so much.
Try the upgrade, but be prepared to reinstall.

that would have toupdate the kernel.... the libraries.... the compilers...... everything...

illl be usrprised if a single binary survives the update, lol.
i would be tempted to do a fresh install... but if backing up your work first just seems to much of a bother.... then 1)yeah, updating should work...2)you should always backup anyway 3)ur lazy !

So I guess I'd have to set up ipchains again etc. (I think I did're setup anyway - silly me not to know 4 sure)) and networking and ... hmmmm,
and maybe the hardware is too old for the new software ....

maybe I should just accept my faith and stick with what works ...

anaconda is good at recognizing everything but i can appreciate the sentiment of "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

The problem with version upgrades such as the one you are proposing is that sometimes not all of the underlying software is replaced, with leads to unstable systems. Back up you critical directories to tape, compact disk or even floppies, and then restore them on the new 'clean' system
