is it possible in ubuntu to do a hardrive diagnostic check

i have dual boot machine 2 partions will the diagnostic check the whole disc

What kind of diagnostic check are you hoping to perform? There are tools to check the status of the filesystem, individual sectors, and even call up messages from the controller itself. Could you be more specific?
